Measuring Mobility Vulnerability on a Continuous Scale: Effects on Travel Time and Satisfaction among Railway Station Users
Abstract
This video presents an M.S. Graduation Project defense at KAIST–KORAIL.
The research investigates the multi-dimensional nature of mobility vulnerability within railway stations and its explicit effects on user experience. While traditional transport policy often utilizes binary, age-based classifications to identify the transport-disadvantaged, this study conceptualizes mobility vulnerability as a continuous spectrum shaped by the intersection of physical, situational, and digital constraints. By doing so, it isolates how these compound barriers channel through both physical delays and psychological burdens to impact overall user satisfaction.
Using empirical survey data from 1,000 railway users, the study employs Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to derive a continuous mobility vulnerability score. It further applies an Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) model to examine perceived travel time delays and an Ordered Logit model to verify the independent channels affecting user satisfaction. The findings reveal that mobility vulnerability significantly lowers satisfaction directly through psychological channels—such as anxiety and fatigue—beyond the structural delay in travel time, emphasizing the need for empathetic and information-centric station designs.
