How Age-Related Constraints Reshape Transport Disadvantage in Dynamic Railway Information Systems: Evidence from Virtual Aging Simulation

Abstract

This video presents an M.S. Graduation Project defense at KAIST–KORAIL.

The research investigates how age-related physical and cognitive constraints reshape transport disadvantage in dynamic railway information systems. While accessibility in railway stations has often been discussed in terms of physical mobility, this study focuses on information accessibility—particularly how older adults may experience difficulties when navigating real-time train information, large-scale departure boards, and dynamically changing station environments.

Using a virtual aging simulation in a VR-based railway station environment, the study examines changes in user behavior, gaze patterns, task performance, cognitive load, and pupil responses. The findings suggest that age-related constraints can make information acquisition itself a transport barrier, highlighting the need for more inclusive information design in railway stations.

Presentation Overview

This presentation covers the following key topics:

  • Aging society and railway information accessibility
  • Transport disadvantage in dynamic information environments
  • VR-based experimental design with virtual aging simulation
  • Behavioral, gaze-based, and cognitive-load analysis
  • Design implications for age-friendly railway information systems
